Clockwise from top left: Lord Of The Rings: The Fellowship Of The Ring, A.I., Ali, Audition, Mulholland Drive, Amores Perros, Moulin Rogue, Memento, The Royal Tenenbaums, Monsters Inc.

Have the Oscars ever gotten it more wrong than they did in March of 2002, whilst Tom Hanks surpassed Best Picture to the treacly, forgettable biopic A Beautiful Mind? Okay, simply they've—the Academy has been making boneheaded requires just shy of a century. But it’s nevertheless hard to think about many Oscar-night moments as deflating as Ron Howard’s victory over no longer just four worthier opponents but each superior movie his wasn’t competing in opposition to. Because 2001 became extra than a super 12 months for movies. It become an all-timer, perhaps even filthier with masterpieces than the fabled 1999.

2001 gave us powerhouse studio movies—a competition of hobbits, monsters, unhappy robots, and all-famous person heists, all classing up the multiplex. Musicals were given thrillingly, eccentrically modern. Horror experienced a miniature renaissance. Major works arrived from Mexico, Japan, France, Hong Kong, and such a lot of different points on the arena-cinema map. The triumphs got here in all shapes and sizes, genres and languages. Consider them honorable mentions; each might have made a better Best Picture, too. As ordinary, we caught to movies launched in America in the course of the calendar yr in question, which is why you gained’t discover Spirited Away or Y Tu Mamá También on the list (look for them subsequent year, when we cite our favorites of 2002), and additionally why you will find Memento and In The Mood For Love there, no matter earlier festival debuts.

Keep studying for The A.V. Club’s listing of the 25 high-quality movies of 2001, as selected via a dozen of our regular individuals. Don’t agree with our picks? Hey, that’s ok, it became a treasure trove of riches in 2001—there were so many appropriate movies that you may make a very strong list of those that didn’t make the cut. Happy with how we voted? The audience is the enemy in the profoundly scathing provocations of Michael Haneke. But at the least once, Austria’s highest quality Funny Gamesman channeled his penchant to antagonize into something extra confounding than merciless—a pointedly cryptic puzzle-field of intertwined Parisian lives. Beginning with a public war of words that has an increasing number of devastating outcomes for the strangers worried, Code Unknown unfolds as a mysterious jumble of vignettes, provided out of order, elliptically sequenced. It’s an not going cousin to the we-are-all-connected ensemble pieces of the filmmaker represented two spaces down in this very listing, besides that Haneke is much less interested in what unites us than what divides us—screw ups of communique, disparities in privilege. The fragmentary nature of the movie gives its personal praise for connoisseurs of misunderstanding, a bounty of tantalizing obfuscation and cognitive dissonance. What’s more, it speaks to a bigger subject matter no much less relevant in our deceptively “connected” present: society itself getting lost in translation. [A.A. Dowd]

Formally inventive and narratively subversive, Cure proves that even a style as worn-out because the serial-killer film may be expanded by way of a filmmaker of Kiyoshi Kurosawa’s self belief. The Pulse director eschews whodunit conference by means of introducing severa murderers, all with one issue in not unusual: They’ve crossed paths with Mamiya (Masato Hagiwara), an eerily calm amnesiac with robust powers of concept. Though detective Takabe (Kōji Yakusho) and his psychiatrist partner (Tsuyoshi Ujiki) capture up with Mamiya quickly, what follows is a pores and skin-crawling portrait of mental decay that borrows from David Fincher’s Seven and anticipates his later Zodiac. Kurosawa’s best gambit is by no means cuing visitors to search for any particular locus of chance inside his body. Instead, he fills each shot with indistinct anxiety and dread, after which just holds on it. Everything stays slightly “off” even if nothing strange occurs. Until it does, of route. [Vikram Murthi]

Reinvigorating Mexican cinema at the begin of the millennium, this grisly triptych of blood on the pavement, human (and canine) suffering, and primal goals released the career of Alejandro González Iñárritu. Traversing the socioeconomic strata of Mexico City, screenwriter Guillermo Arriaga’s tricky plot tragically connects the parallel plights of a Spanish model improving from a automobile crash, a homeless hitman lacking his daughter, and a reckless romantic played by way of a younger Gael García Bernal, in his first film role. Flaunting a memorable soundtrack that reflects the evolution of rock track in the us of a on the time, Amores Perros stays the Oscar-winning director’s most visceral work to this point—a real gut punch of a debut. [Carlos Aguilar]

Baz Luhrmann’s Hollywood-thru-France-through-Australia revival of the movie musical arrived simply in time for the 21st century—and but maybe nonetheless more than one decades too early, judging from some of the contemporaneous reactions. Those court cases, approximately the freneticism of a musical where the director cuts too speedy to look the dancing and—prepare the fainting sofa—now and again mixes and suits bits of various anachronistic pop songs, now experience key to the movie’s legacy, reflecting Luhrmann’s willingness to simply grapple with the tune-video revolution and push the movie musical form forward. He’s making use of the same modernism that enthralls penniless writer Christian (Ewan McGregor) and gifted/doomed courtesan Satine (Nicole Kidman) in 1900 Paris. The film’s love story is old-fashioned melodrama, however Luhrmann’s telling transcends cornball declarations (on occasion cribbed from Paul McCartney, Dolly Parton, and Elton John, amongst others), shooting the moment where pop schmaltz spins out into lovestruck delirium. Luhrmann’s decision to rent actors in preference to singers pays off brilliantly with shining-big name work from McGregor and Kidman—and an unforgettable rendition of “Like A Virgin” achieved with the aid of Jim Broadbent. [Jesse Hassenger]

Speaking of Nicole Kidman, she’s resplendent by means of candlelight, choking again gasps of terror, on this classically eerie outlier from an generation while mainstream horror become otherwise operating in the metatextual shadow of Scream. Making his English-language debut, author-director Alejandro Amenábar scored an unexpected hit by using sticking a game film celebrity and a couple of pale kids right into a foggy haunted house in post-WWII Europe. There’s an evergreen elegance to Amenábar’s craftsmanship that suggests The Others might have been launched in any era and still related with audiences. Credit Kidman’s timeless display presence, too; rarely has it served this sort of nicely-engineered tale, springing an convenient (and trendy) lure of fright. [Jason Shawhan]

Few phrases are as balk-worth as “rock musical,” however John Cameron Mitchell’s version of his enduring stage musical has the swagger to pull that dubious genre off. The filmmaker reprises the starring function of a punk-rock singer whose attempt to emigrate from East Germany results in a botched gender-reassignment operation, heartache, and an American concert tour shadowing the former lover who stole their songs. Light years in advance of its time in its remedy of gender and the power of drag, Hedwig is an agonizing love tale, lent profound weight by means of the autumn of The Berlin Wall. It’s also delightful, way to bawdy cabaret-fashion humor and Stephen Trask’s original songs, that are every bit as audacious as the title individual. [Leila Latif]

Baz Luhrmann Film Soundtracks, Ranked

No dialogue of Baz Luhrmann’s films – and his maximalist, hyper-sensory fashion – is complete without bringing up their similarly greater-is-greater method to music. With the assist of his longtime music supervisor Anton Monsted (who began out as his assistant on 1996’s “Romeo + Juliet”), the Australian director has become synonymous with technology-defying, genre-compounding pop soundtracks that infuse his films’ historical settings with modern sensibilities.

That trademark first emerged inside the 90’s-grunge soundtrack of “Romeo + Juliet” and eventually developed into the mash-up mania of this year’s “Elvis.” Like “The Great Gatsby” and “Moulin Rouge!” earlier than it, the field workplace hit blends the King’s classic tunes with reimagined and original songs by way of some of these days’s largest artists.

In honor of Luhrmann’s present day, TheWrap presents a ranking of his films by using soundtrack. (Note: “Australia” and “Strictly Ballroom” do no longer have lengthy sufficient soundtracks to merit inclusion.)

5. Elvis (2022)Warner Bros.

This soundtrack of all soundtracks honors The King of Rock and Roll himself — and lots of his affects — in Baz Luhrman’s signature awesome style. Austin Butler’s vocals do justice to Elvis’ — as they need to after his three-12 months immersion into the King’s personality and his lifestyles. You have classics sung with the aid of Elvis himself like “Craw-Fever,” “I’m Coming Home,” “Summer Kisses/In My Body,” “‘68 Comeback Special (Medley),” “If I Can Dream,” “Burning Love” and greater, after which there are the Austin Butler versions of The King’s discography like “Hound Dog,” “Baby, Let’s Play House” and “Trouble.” Shonka Dukureh’s “Hound Dog” packs so much strength. Yola’s “Strange Things Are Happening Every Day” echoes “The Godmother of Rock and Roll” Sister Rosetta Tharpe, who she portrays within the film.

As if Elvis weren’t already an icon himself, other important artists came together to reimagine his discography or pattern it in new songs altogether. Doja Cat created an authorized banger with “Vegas” which samples Shonka Dukureh’s “Hound Dog.” Eminem and CeeLo use the outlet of “Jailhouse Rock” in their new tune for the movie, “The King and I.” Swae Lee and Diplo pattern “That’s All Right” in their track “Tupelo Shuffle.” Kacey Musgraves’ rendition of “Can’t Help Falling in Love” paired with the scene it backs inspires all varieties of feelings. Stevie Nicks shines some mild at the lesser-regarded “Cotton Candy Land,” and Måneskin rocks out to “If I Can Dream.”

Putting together a soundtrack that displays a musical fixture is no small feat, and Luhrman went big with this one. Layers of tradition, American history and a touch of greater current sounds boost Elvis’ biopic.

- Dessi Gomez4. The Get Down (2016)Netflix

Luhrmann and playwright Stephen Adly Guirgis’ -season Netflix collection chronicles the upward thrust of hip-hop from its underground origins within the Bronx to its eventual transformation as a tentpole musical genre, as told by means of a set of teenagers dwelling in New York City inside the ‘70s. So, it’s handiest becoming that the soundtrack might mirror the instances, with funk and disco inflections from artists like Donna Summer, Miguel, Janelle Monáe, Leon Bridges, 6LACK, Christina Aguilera and Jaden Smith (who additionally stars within the display). Hip-hop forefather Grandmaster Flash — the DJ who invented the “lower back-spinning” approach that become able to transform information’ drum beat sections into beats for rapping — helped propose at the series alongside top notch MC Nas, who wrote all the raps for Justice Smith’s wordsmith individual Ezekiel.

“If your series was constrained, you [weren’t] gonna get no actual audience,” Flash, who served as companion manufacturer on the series, advised ABC News in 2017 about the diverse genres of statistics he might look for to find the “get down.” “It changed into a constant digging and going into the record shops and trying to find that drum ruin. And it never turned into necessarily approximately Black music or white song or foreign music. It became simply track.”

3. Romeo + Juliet (1996)Twentieth Century Fox

While “Strictly Ballroom” turned into a modest art-residence hit, “William Shakespeare’s Romeo + Juliet” put Luhrmann on the global map. And it also cemented his reputation as a grasp of movie track, something that he could hold to boost during the relaxation of his (nevertheless ongoing) profession.

Luhrmann smartly hired song manufacturers Marius de Vries (who had labored with Madonna, winning a Grammy nomination for Album of the Year for “Ray of Light”) and Nellee Hooper (then some thing of a soundtrack icon, having produced Smashing Pumpkins’ “The End Is the Beginning Is the End” and Tina Turner’s “GoldenEye”) to work along his ordinary composer Craig Armstrong. Not best did it deliver the score a thoroughly current ride-hop texture that complimented his publish-“Pulp Fiction” take on the source cloth, but it allowed de Vries and Hooper the possibility to mix (or remix) the sounds that wound up on the soundtrack.

Together, they gave “#1 Crush,” first of all a B-side from their inaugural single “Vow,” a slinky overhaul and a distorted Madonna sample, and helped pick songs like Des’ree’s “Kissing You” (which Hooper had produced) and bring new songs like Butthole Surfer’s “Whatever (I Had a Dream)” (which turned into co-produced by way of the Dust Brothers). They in the end ended up curating a grungy, electronically embellished mixtape that turned into part of all people’s CD series (the disc itself become a distinct, neon orange color with silhouettes of palm trees). Radiohead? Check. Everclear, explicitly referencing the play? Double-check. Indistinguishable ‘90s alt-rock bands which you could be difficult-pressed to recall today? Yes, please.

But if the soundtrack is remembered for something, it’s introducing the arena to “Lovefool,” the extremely-catchy unmarried from Swedish pop rock outfit The Cardigans. The track were launched some months earlier than the soundtrack, the first unmarried from their 1/3 album “First Band on the Moon.” But it exploded after its inclusion at the “Romeo + Juliet” soundtrack and propelled the band to worldwide reputation. It wouldn’t be their best soundtrack jam, both. “Erase/Rewind,” from their wonderful 1998 album “Gran Turismo,” might appear on the soundtrack to the forgettable techno-mystery “The Thirteenth Floor.” Other songs might appear on the soundtracks to “The X-Files: Fight the Future,” “Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery” and “10 Things I Hate About You.” Rightfully so.

“Romeo + Juliet’s” authentic motion picture soundtrack could chart all around the global. In America, the album could reach four x platinum repute, having sold more than 3 million copies. A 2nd volume of the soundtrack changed into released with greater songs, a more emphasis on the orchestral rating (and dialogue from the film, a staple of ‘90s soundtrack albums) and a brand new Butthole Surfers/Dust Brothers jam. It did reasonably well too. A 10th-anniversary edition of the authentic “Romeo + Juliet” soundtrack was released in 2007 with bonus tracks, which include two of Craig Armstrong’s killer orchestral cues.

- Drew Taylor2. The Great Gatsby (2013)Warner Bros.

While now not the first movie model of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s 1925 novel, “The Great Gatsby,” Baz Luhrmann’s adaptation may reign excellent. In conventional Luhrmann course, his camp method elevates the extravagance of Jay Gatsby’s international and the roaring twenties. Although set nearly a century earlier, Luhrmann and longtime music supervisor, Anton Monsted, created a music list to reflect traditional jazz of the 1920s with the cutting-edge-day hip-hop from the 2010s. Monsted defined in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, “Baz and I call it the ‘sliding doors’ between music this is very true to the period of the movie’s putting in 1922 and the song of today.” The soundtrack capabilities a crafty aggregate of authentic singles from Fergie’s “A Little Party Never Killed Nobody” to haunting covers — which include Beyonce and Andre 3000’s rendition of Amy Winehouse’s “Back to Black” – in addition to the movie’s first single, “Young and Beautiful” via Lana Del Rey. Monsted and Lana Del Rey labored alongside composer Craig Armstrong, to incorporate the film’s theme as a musical motif by way of blending the music in the score as nicely.

R/badmovies - 2001 Maniacs Overview

https://foreverfinalgirl.com/2001-maniacs/

I suppose 2001 Maniacs is probably my preferred movie to look at in the course of the 4th of July season. A terrific comedic slasher movie with Robert England and Lin Shaye. 2001 Maniacs puts an entire new twist at the “Southern Hospitality” announcing. I’ll in no way think about it the same once more.

Is this a few hillbilly fact show sort of factor?–Kat

Eight young college students are on their way to Florida for spring ruin when they all take a shortcut through a southern metropolis who has a peculiar way of showing southern hospitality.

I see our barb-a-cuties were given the skewering rod raring to move.–Mayor Buckman

We have 8 interesting kills. I’m no longer counting the town folks who died over one hundred fifty years earlier. We get drawn and quartered, acid funneled down one’s throat, a bell crushing a person, and that’s just 3 of them. One of the greater painful ones that had me draw back become whilst the 2 girls rammed a rod via Ricky’s ass going all of the way through him and coming out his mouth. Ouch! All of the kills had been decently made and innovative.

We have a few first-rate style actors in 2001 Maniacs. Robert England (referred to as Freddy Krueger in the A Nightmare on Elm Street franchise and several different horror movies) performs Mayor Buckman, the mayor of Pleasant Valley, a confederate town at some stage in the Civil War days wherein northern aggressors wiped out the metropolis. And Lin Shaye (recognized for Critters 1-2, Hood of Horror, Insidious franchise, A Nightmare on Elm Street 1 and New Nightmare, Ouija, and several other horror films. She’s also the sister of Producer Robert Shaye.) plays Granny Boone, kind of the matriarch of the town. Both did extraordinary with their roles.

The rest of the actors did a decent task with their roles. The college children had been simply traumatic sufficient that you rooted for them to die. The exception is Anderson and Joey who you was hoping would live but die ultimately.

We start with three university buddies who're heading for Florida for spring damage. At a fuel station they run into three different humans additionally going to Florida. Anderson, one of the men from the authentic organization has his eyes on the recent blonde from the second one institution. Joey seems to love him too, however they go their separate ways.

The next day our 3 men discover a small metropolis called Pleasant Valley this is having a summer celebration referred to as Guts and Glory. They determine to check out the birthday celebration due to the fact everyone is so pleasant. Soon after they come, the opposite group of pals display up there as nicely, followed by means of a biker couple. Somehow the mayor and the townspeople get them to live in a single day. Despite their racist remarks approximately the biker couple who are African American and Asian.

One of the young women eyes one hick and he or she is going off with him to make out. He blindfolds her and while he's taking the blindfold off, all her limbs are tied to one of a kind horses. He makes a remark and then sets the horses off, tearing off her arms and legs.

For the relaxation of the film they are basically singled out and killed. One guy is seduced by way of a milkmaid and compelled into funneling what he concept was moonshine, which turns out to be acid.

The subsequent day the ladies are despatched with Granny Boone to get pampered and dancing. We haveladies left whilst Joey decides to go away and locate Anderson. At this factor Ricky indicates up and joins inside the fun. Unfortunately whilst the girls are singing they don’t be aware of the phrases. If they'd then they will have lived. The one girl there stands beneath a bell and Granny Boone pulls a rope, dropping the bell on her, killing her.

Ricky runs off, however is captured by way of the man he installed with the night before. He gets a pretty painful ending. They have him held over a table even asladies ram a rod up his butt, popping out of his mouth.

Now at this factor, why are the closing people no longer thinking where their friends are? Finally Joey does when one female is conserving her buddy’s dog tags that she would by no means have let all people have.

The one nerdy buddy (which all of these types of films have) in the end receives a girl to take note of him. Unfortunately, whilst she goes down on him, she places in her mouth a few kind of steel enamel. And you can bet what she does. Yep, she bites his dick off.

Now the biker man is thinking in which his female friend is whilst he thinks he sees her run off. He chases her and it turns out no longer to be her. He receives caught and killed by using some type of press that the townspeople push till his eyes pop out.

It’s right down to our lastsurvivors: Joey and Anderson. She is tied to a chair and Anderson to the desk. Anderson gets loose and fights the mayor, best to pressure him to allow them to move. The mayor gives his word that they can pass and the couple drive off at the motorbike.

The next morning the couple suggests up to the police station telling the cops what took place. The sheriff (?) takes them returned to the vicinity and it’s just a graveyard. He tells them how over a hundred and fifty years ago the northern army came thru and killed everybody. He explains that each 12 months a few drunk college children pull pranks saying the same aspect they had been announcing.

Anderson apologizes and says they'll go away. As they depart the place they end up hitting a cord that beheads them. The final victims of Pleasant Valley that yr.

Overall, I discovered this movie a a laugh, bloody and gory experience. There were times I turned into rooting for the university kids to die in addition to the townspeople. I found the film was made genuinely properly and in case you don’t mind the nudity (LOL), and some of the as a substitute colourful language, you then must take a look at out this movie. If not anything else, for the kills and the awesome Robert England and Lin Shaye.

And now to your Forever Final Girl Exclusive…Did you realize?:

Robert Englund and Lin Shaye regarded in A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984), Wes Craven’s New Nightmare (1994), and Wish You Were Dead (2001).

2001 Maniacs serves as each a sequel, in addition to smooth reboot to Herschell Gordon Lewis’ 1964 cult conventional Two Thousand Maniacs.

The plot point of the massacred city in Georgia was loosely stimulated with the aid of General Sherman’s destructive march via Georgia, which left Atlanta burnt to the floor.

Both Tim Sullivan and Chris Kobin (screenwriter) lower back 5 years later to make a sequel, 2001 Maniacs: Field of Screams. However, Robert Englund was recast without his knowledge.

There have been two tremendous cameos: Kane Hodder plays a person who seizes Anderson proper before the massive combat between Anderson and Mayor Buckman. And Eli Roth who plays a man whose armadillo is hit by way of a vehicle close to the beginning of the movie. He performs the same character he played in his own characteristic directorial debut, 2002 Cabin Fever.
